Visualizing Data

I saw this article and thought it has so much potential for visualizing statistics or any kinds of information!

Todays Airplane toilet pictures for you....

So, today I spoke about the NPR article about the Greek artist that likes to make images of Flemish Paintings..
To pass the time during long flights, artist Nina Katchadourian goes to the lavatory, adorns herself in tissue paper costume, and creates hilarious self-portrait photos in the style of Flemish Renaissance paintings. She calls the series“Seat Assignment: Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style.”

Here is the link to the full article and more pictures! I think they are hilarious and pretty awesome!

Jessica Falco- Proposal for Final

I am interested in photographing young women roughly between the ages of 18 and 24. Simple portraiture would be best, photographing these girls horizontally with my camera from their shoulders up capturing an intimate gaze. I would like for the girls to be staring into the camera, making eye contact with the viewer to create a connection between these two people and the girls to claim dominance and confidence within the picture. I will be using a fabric backdrop for the girls to be photographed in front of, placing it in a way that drapes like a curtain behind them.

My reason for photographing young women is because I feel this time in their lives is particularly special. They are out of their childhood stage, yet not completely into their adulthood stage, placing them in a kind of middle area of their lives. I feel women of this age possess a kind of beauty that therefore differentiates them between the two groups and this kind of beauty is what intrigues me most. Photographing the young women as simply as possible allows for the uniqueness of the girl to be the central focus of the picture and having a horizontal frame will allow more a view of the fabric behind them.

The importance of the fabric behind them was to add another element to the picture without taking away from the actual figure. I wanted there to be a romantic, feminine and gentle quality to the picture besides the figures and these qualities to me visually are found in florals. I feel the floral backdrop adds dimension to the photograph, an interesting element that compliments the figure in front of it and a way to introduce more colors into the photograph. When I think of flowers, I immediately think of women of this age as they too possess beauty and innocence.

Daniel Buren

I was introduced to a new sculptor artist this week, Daniel Buren. I really appreciate his use of color, space, and architecture. I believe he heavily relates the my practice both in photography and sculpture. Check him out;

Proposal

Emily Kohl-Mattingley
Photography 3B
Official: Final Proposal

For the spring 2012, Photography 3B, final I will be creating an installation piece within the 2nd floor Undergraduate Project space. The installation will have two main components, audio and visual. The audio will be a combination of sound recordings taken by my Grandmother in the years between [roughly] 1970-1990. The audio recordings are of family parties, musical recitals, recounting of family history, and random everyday conversations. The audio will be digitally converted from old cassette tapes- (for a clearer sense of the audio). The visual will be a slide projection series of interior landscapes. The photographs, specifically, will be current images of my grandfather’s house where the recordings had been taken several decades ago.
The project space will be darkened as the slides are projected across the room, with the audio is playing aloud. Seating will be provided to encourage viewers to spend some time looking at the images and listening to the audio. The sound of voices, music, and random chattering will fill the empty spaces within the photographs, of the rooms and hallways, which have long been left empty.
